Mamma Mia, ABBA's back
By STEPHANIE McGRATH
The ABBA Generation
A*Teens
(Universal)
Get ready all you dancing queens, ABBA is back.
You've heard it all before. You've sung along with Mamma Mia in your car and danced to Dancing Queen at a highschool event. ABBA had super-hits and the A*Teens are hoping they can coast on ABBA's past success.
The ABBA Generation is a fun album for the first few tracks. The songs are danceable and a breeze to sing along with. It's hard to tell the difference between the A*Teens and the real, tried and true ABBA.
The covers do have a nineties flair, lot's of dance beats for the Electric Circus circuit and extra synthesised noises. During the spoken word bits on "Take A Chance On Me" ("come on honey," "take a chance on me" and so on), they've added an echo-effect instead of the breathy, come-hither style in the original song.
Take a Chance is ABBA on fast-forward, just listening to it makes you want to buy an inhaler and images of the long-gone Mini Pops come to mind.
The problem with this album is that you have heard these songs many, many times before. There's nothing new here except for a few modernised sound-effects.
