Aguilera follows in Spears footsteps

Britney Spears may have started a trend.

What else could explain the appearance of the second teenage former Mouseketeer with a big voice to emerge with a huge, provocative pop hit in 1999?

That's right. The 18-year-old Aguilera's Genie In A Bottle, currently a No. 1 hit in the U.S. and climbing the charts in Canada, follows 17-year-old Spears' ... Baby One More Time.

And like the Spears' song, Genie In A Bottle is generating some raised eyebrows for its sexually charged lyrics: "I'm a genie in a bottle, you gotta rub me the right way, If you want to be with me, I can make your wish come true, I gotta like what you do."

Thankfully, it manages to be less irritating than ... Baby One More Time, if only remotely so, due to Aguilera's strong, warm vocals that recall Whitney Houston.

As for the rest of her album, in stores on Tuesday, the material is that now predictable mix of pop and R&B with the emphasis on ballads written by hitmaking producers and songwriters whose credits include 'N Sync, Boyzone, Monica and Brandy.

Still, there are a few standouts -- the soulful So Emotional, Love For All Seasons, Somebody's Somebody and Blessed and the catchy, uptempo When You Put Your Hands On Me.

Also included is Aguilera's previous adult-contemporary hit, Reflection, the song that garnered her first big break when she was chosen to record it for the Disney animated film, Mulan.
