Chase Aston, international make-up artist for the Body Shop has done make-up for stars like Britney Spears and the Spice Girls. He took a minute out of his busy day to give AllPop readers some good make-up tips for spring.
Q1. How do you disguise your winter colour (ie. being pale!) without looking like you poured fake tan all over yourself?
Chase: “To avoid that bronze mask effect, just use a little Tinted Moisturiser as a sheer base, then lightly swirl on some Brush-On Bronze with an oversized brush – this gives the skin a subtle, healthy glow that looks completely natural and is flattering on all complexions.”
Q2. What’s a few essential make-up tips and products to bring on a spring break vacation to a sunny destination if you want to look good but not have the bother with too much preparation time before hitting the sand?
Chase: “A good Tinted Moisturiser with a minimum SPF8, Colourings Brush-On Bronze, Waterproof Mascara, Lip Tint 10 shade: Natural, Lip Liner 01 shade: Beech and Shimmer Dust. These are the absolute essentials and all you need by day to give your skin a healthy glow whilst still looking natural, fresh and unfussy. Then for the evening, just add Lip Liner to give the mouth more definition and gloss over with Lip Tint for a touch of natural glamour. Brush a little extra Brush-On Bronze across the eyes and cheeks for subtle shading, then finish off with Shimmer Dust – don’t forget the shoulders and décolletage.
Q3. What are some good spring shades to look forward to this year?
Chase: “The hottest shades for S/S 2001 are lilacs, pinks, peaches and lavenders – for both day and night. And as we move into the summer months, glamorous bronze and gold are worn together with lilac and pink for offbeat, but very fresh contrast.”
Q4. How do you fight the dreaded dry skin of winter?
Chase: Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise! If you take a bath in the evening before going to bed, use a good moisturizing bath oil for the body and good skincare during the day. Then in the morning, start the day with a supremely moisturizing skincare range like The Body Shop Skin Defensives or good old Vitamin E Face Cream and keep slathering it on whenever you get a chance. Through the day, don’t wear drying powder-based make-up that will act like a moisture sponge – opt for a richer formulation that will offer some protection from the winter elements.
Q5. What is the one make-up faux pas of the spring season?
Chase: Taking the international fashion catwalk trends literally! Adapt the S/S 2001 runway looks to real life – all that liquid eyeliner on a hot summer’s day is just not practical.
