That Spicy feeling

By DAVE VEITCH -- Calgary Sun

SCHIZOPHONIC
Geri Halliwell
(EMI 521 009 2)

Album Cover We can cross off "musical differences" from the list of potential reasons the former Ginger Spice left that girl group of hers.

Halliwell's debut solo album contains all the elements of a Spice Girls album (a Motowny track, a faux-Latin number, a lushly orchestrated ballad) while successfully branching out into sassy, Shirley Bassey territory on Look at Me and appropriating the sultry jazziness of Peggy Lee's Fever on Goodnight Kiss.

Halliwell continually makes the best of her tone-challenged voice and only embarrasses herself on the excruciating quasi-rap tune that ends the album. "Does tomorrow belong to me?" she asks in Walkaway, a song that addresses her Spice Girls departure. The material and performances on Schizophonic suggest, at the very least, she should be granted another 15 minutes of fame.
