This time around, Hanson grows up
By STEPHANIE McGRATH -- AllPop
This Time Around (single)
Hanson
Universal
When Hanson first entered the spotlight, the three brothers made female fans hysterical, and their catchy single could be heard in every record store, restaurant and bar around. But then, Zac, Taylor, Isaac and "MMMBop" disappeared.
Now the boys are back. They're taller, older and have shorter hair, and with the new look comes a new sound.
The simplistic, appealing stylings of "MMMBop" can still be heard now and then in "This Time Around", but the boys are branching out.
Providing an alternative to thin, simple dance beats copied by dozens of teenage bands, Hanson's latest song is full of rich, real instruments and leans more towards rock than teen pop.
This single is pop for listeners who are tired of synthetic drums and chirpy love songs. Although the chorus of "This Time Around" won't dance around your head a thousand times like "MMMBop" did, it's not easy to forget and is just catchy enough to bound up the charts.
Congratulations to Hanson for being brave enough to mature past the pop that brought them fame and play songs they're obviously into. Chances are, their fans have grown up too and are ready for something fresh and new.
