*Nsync disappoints
By STEPHANIE McGRATH
No Strings Attached
*Nsync
(Jive/Zomba)
No matter what anyone says about "No Strings Attached," it's going to break sales records.
*NSYNC has already sold a million copies of their new album and it was just released two days ago. For months now, every *NSYNC fan website, chat room and message board has been buzzing with excitement - no one could wait for the album.
So now it's here and does it live up to the hype?
Well, it's definitely different from the first, "*NSYNC," which was full of Backstreet-like ballads such as "Tearin' Up My Heart" and "I Drive Myself Crazy".
Instead of the sweet little boys who sang earnestly about broken hearts that we remember from two years ago, we find grown-ups on "No Strings Attached". The group members sound a little bit bitter, older, wiser and are struggling to break away from the ballad-heavy music coming from the Backstreet camp.
The tracks on this album are quick and lean more towards the land of R & B and dance than pure pop, especially on a song like "Space Cowboy (Yippie-Yi-Yay)" featuring TLC's Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes.
But the boys have included some tracks on this album that sound comfortingly familiar even though they're brand new. "This I Promise You" and "I Thought She Knew" are two pure pop ballads which will satisfy the fans who long to daydream as their favourite *NSYNC member croons about love.
The boys should have also hung onto their boyish charm. *NSYNC's attempts at growing up sound forced and completely out of character. (Imagine Lil' Kim suddenly morphing into Britney Spears, and you'll understand just how much out of character). I don't know about you, but I find it difficult to imagine the angelic Justin Timberlake naturally developing his new-found twang and slang.
The worst track without a doubt is "Digital Get Down". There are just too many noises: Screaming fax machines, beeps, whistles and synthesizers of all types make the song sound confusing and unpleasant.
It's not all bad though. Fast tracks such as the single "Bye Bye Bye" and "No Strings Attached" are fun and will surely inspire thousands, if not millions, of fans to dance along.
To be honest though, whether or not the effects are overdone or if some of the songs are a bit weaker than others won't matter in the end. *NSYNC fans are going to love this album no matter what.
