AllPop interviews Sugar Jones

TORONTO -- Sugar Jones have just finished the very first press conference of their pop music career, and Sahara MacDonald, Julie Crochetiere, Mirella Dell'Auila, Andrea Henry and Maiko Watson are flying.

The five girls have been hidden away in an expansive waterfront condo in Toronto until their identities were revealed on Sunday night's episode of Global TV's reality show "Popstars".

Looking glamorous in glitter, highlighted hair and well-chosen outfits, the girls are unnervingly tall and eager to talk about their future as a musical act.

"We're writing continually, on a weekly basis," Sahara says about the girls' desire to be more than a manufactured pop act.

"We're laid back, we're trying to do what we do best," says Julie. "All we ask is that people listen, give us a chance."

What Sugar Jones really hopes is that people give their vocals a chance. Each of the members has musical experience, including voice lessons, choirs and musicals. Although some of them do have dance training, Sugar Jones warns their new fans not to expect any Britney Spears-like moves.

"We're more focused vocally," says Maiko. "We're more of a vocal group. Dancing is just something that we can all do. We want to incorporate it, but the vocals come first."

Sahara, who denounced the concept of a single leader for Sugar Jones during the press conference, seems comfortable doing most of the talking about Sugar Jones' music and goals.

"We really want to communicate," she says. "We don't have a target audience, We want everybody who understands, or has a connection to our sound, to like it and to stick with us."

This is the first day the final five have been able to talk about their experience without breaking the "Popstars" secrecy, so a connection with anyone, even a random fan who thinks they're good-looking, excites the girls.

When told that some fans of the show find the girls very easy on the eyes, they respond with a loud shriek.

"Really!? Wow!," they shout and then start to laugh.

Still in the very early stages of fame, Sahara, Andrea, Mirella, Maiko and Julie are excited about the idea of becoming well-known.

"Everybody I've been stopped by has been really cool," says Sahara about being recognized. "Everyone's giving us props. There's no weirdness, just positive energy."

"You don't know them, but they feel like they know you 'cause they've watched us from day one," says Maiko.

"I think the weird thing is going to be when somebody screams, like, 'Andrea', and you don't recognize anyone but they know who you are," says Julie.

Sugar Jones will take the stage for their very first live performance on Monday, April 2 in Toronto. They will debut their first single, "Days Like That", on Sunday (April 1) during the next episode of "Popstars".
