This summer, aspiring pop stars will get a chance to join the ranks of Sugar Jones, Eden's Crush and Hear'Say - a.k.a. the pop groups created through the reality show "Popstars" around the world.
Sugar Jones hasn't even released an album yet but Michael Geddes, the head of Lone Eagle Entertainment which produces "Popstars", is already looking ahead to his next musical creation.
Late this summer, Geddes and officials from Universal Music (which also signed Sugar Jones), will once again conduct a massive talent search for a new group. This time around Geddes will be searching for male and female singers.
"It will be a completely different dynamic," Geddes says about the next version of "Popstars".
Geddes goes on to say he's confident the audience will tune in once again to see who makes the band.
"It's very, very compelling to see something created, manufactured or not," he says about the process of forming a pop act.
Geddes says there's something almost "Un-Canadian" about the success of the reality show, meaning that they've managed to create a successful, Canadian show instead of riding on U.S. coattails.
"I think we've hit the homerun," he says about the show's popularity. "The goal was to make a big bang and we've done that."
This summer, Geddes plans to ride the "big bang" to more success and expects "two to three times" the number of star wannabes at the Canada-wide open auditions than last summer's auditions which reportedly drew over 4,000 singers.
But if you don't make the cut this year, fear not.
"'Popstars' conceivably could be done every year. We're [Lone Eagle] star makers," Geddes says. "This could be something people with talent can look forward to every year."
Geddes even mentioned a possible Quebecois version of "Popstars" which would document the creation of a French-language music group.
Like this year's "Popstars", the next group of singing stars will be groomed and prepped for stardom in Toronto. Geddes hopes to freshen the show with the addition of male talent, the possibility of different visual backgrounds during the audition process to make the show more "compelling".
Meanwhile, the Sugar Jones girls are busy pumping their first single, "Days Like That", and plan to release their first album in late June or July.
"They'll either be successful or not, cut it or not," says Geddes when questioned about Sugar Jones' prospects. "But we predict we've got something people want to hear more of."
