Savage Garden calls the shots

Darren Hayes, one-half of Australian super-group Savage Garden, spent some time talking about being independent and getting over a broken heart.

Savage Garden is enjoying a hit with their single "I Knew I Loved You" from their second album, "Affirmation". Darren told MTV that the inspiration behind the duo's latest hit came from some painful experiences.

"I think a lot of the record is about my marriage, and a lot of it is that disappointment that it didn't work out," he said.

But Darren quickly pointed out that "Affirmation" isn't just about losing love, it's about being proud of his career.

"I think the one thing that I love about this career," Darren told MTV, "is that it has taught me that you don't have to sell your soul to sell records."

Darren said he's always been proud of the fact that he and Daniel keep a lot of creative control over their music.

Darren and Daniel are in Asia on a promotional tour and have just finished filming a video for their next single, "Crash and Burn".
