Sweet Kisses - a multitude of bubble-gum ballads
By STEPHANIE McGRATH--AllPop
Sweet Kisses
Jessica Simpson
(Sony/Columbia)
The world of pop ballads has a new, young, blonde (with a little help from a bottle) and attractive singer to add to its cast - 19-year-old Jessica Simpson.
Mariah Carey lovers - this album is for you. Full of tracks with names like "Sweet Kisses" and "My Wonderful," listeners know they're in for smoochy lyrics and dreamy vocals.
Jessica has a nice voice, with a wide range (not unlike Mariah), that will probably guarantee the album some time on the charts. There's nothing earth-shatteringly new or different on any of the tracks but there's a strong supply of heartfelt songs that will ease your craving for well-sung pop.
One of the best tracks on this album is her duet with Nick Lachey (the two are rumoured to be a hot item now), of 98 Degrees, called "Where You Are".
Nick isn't the only established musician Jessica teams up with on this album. "Woman in Me" features Destiny's Child and "I Think I'm In Love With You," includes elements from John Mellencamp's song, "Jack and Diane".
The weakest tracks can be quickly identified. As soon as the beat picks up, Jessica develops a nasty, tough-girl twang heard on "Final Heartbreak" and "I've Got My Eyes On You". Her voice doesn't suit the peppy beat and attitude-heavy requirements for these tracks.
Sweet Kisses is a breezy, dreamy album that will provide, calming background music for ballad-lovers.
