Stars of PsykoBlast talk tour
By STEPHANIE McGRATH -- ALLPOP
Toronto pop fans are hysterically excited about seeing their favourite pop acts at the Psykoblast show tonight and after speaking with members from soulDecision, McMaster & James, Mytown and The Moffatts, AllPop can tell that the pop stars are just as excited about the show as their fans.
Tonight, at the Air Canada Centre, the PsykoBlast tour springs into action delighting pop fans with a stellar line-up: Mytown, McMaster & James, soulDecision, The Moffatts and....the blond pop diva herself....Christina Aguilera.
Although all of the acts falls under the pop music category, each one will be bringing something different to tonight's show.
Bob Moffatt took a break from shopping today to tell AllPop about The Moffatt's plans for tonight's show.
The Canadian brothers plan to play six new songs, including their new single "Bang Bang Boom", from their upcoming album "Submobality" tonight along with 5 old favourites (and yes, Moffatts fans, Bob did promise they'd play "Misery").
Bob says he's not nervous about the performance but he and the rest of the Moffatts are interested to see how fans will react to their new music.
"I think we want our new material to be accepted like any other band and I think this a great opportunity cause we're playing to a lot of fans and I think coming out of the box with the new single, we want as many fans as we can to hear our new music and I think that's what we're most excited about doing, playing our new stuff," Bob says.
According to Bob, The Moffatts have grown up since their last album and thinks their new music will reflect their maturity.
Submobality [the album's title] means anything to do with the visual change of image...we thought it summed up the whole record and what we're all about. We've gone to more of an edgy, mature sound. I think our first record was pretty bubble-gum. It was strictly pop on the last record. This one has more guitars and I guess our voices have matured I think it could cross over to rock radio. I think our fans will see a big difference and everything on the record," he says.
Since The Moffatts have been in Hawaii recording their new, mature album for quite a while, Bob says he and his brothers are excited to be on tour in Canada and promise that they'll enjoy themselves during their performance tonight.
"There's usually something in the show that we create while we're playing," Bob says. "That's the cool thing about playing live is that you can be as spontaneous as you want you don't have to strictly do as you do every night so I'm sure we'll do something different."
Bob sounds cool, calm and collected about tonight's show but Rob James of McMaster & James admits he'll have butterflies in his stomach tonight when he and Luke McMaster take the stage. Although some of the acts performing tonight plan to jump around to get themselves ready for the show, Rob says he and Luke will be trying to calm down.
"We tend to just sit down and relax and close our eyes for a few minutes, just deep breathing and visualisation," Rob says.
But don't let Rob's quiet preparation fool you, this pop singer can't wait for tonight.
Rob says he wants the audience to do "lots and lots of screaming and jumping up and down and throwing things like flowers at the stage," during their set (the first act of the night).
Aside from being pelted with flowers and the screams of happy fans, Rob can't wait to perform one song in particular.
"I'm really looking forward to performing 'I Understand' it's just the most emotionally involved song we've got," Rob says. "I always look forward to performing that song - reaction is always good, it's a song that connects with people on an emotional level so people really think about things after they hear that song. It goes over really, really well."
Dave Bowman of soulDecision spent Thursday night ironing and prepping for the big show.
According to Dave, he and his fellow group members, Ken and Trevor, are more than ready to take the stage tomorrow night.
"We're happy, any time we have a chance to go out and perform, especially in Canada - meet some of our fans and hopefully win some new ones and plus we get to end [the tour] in Vancouver our home town," Dave says. "We're pumped about that."
soulDecision will kick off their half-hour set with "I Don't Need Anyone," a song from their hit album "No One Does It Better". In addition to playing their fans favourites, Dave is promising some interesting movements to accompany their set.
"People might see that we're doing some old school stuff with the movement in the band," he says. "I wouldn't really call it dancing cause we just aren't really good dancers but we're kind of doing old school....70s kind of stuff with the the whole band, guitar player, bass player and everybody involved."
If fans are wondering what they can do to show their appreciation during soulDecision's performance, Dave has some easy advice.
"I love them [fans] to sing along with every song," he says. "I just want everybody to have a good time. We have a good time onstage and we hope that it transfers to the crowd. That's really what's it all about, enjoying the music and having a good time."
Dave went on to say that he and the rest of the artists on the PsykoBlast tour are planning to have fun both onstage and off.
"I'm sure we'll go out and have a good time," he says. "I have no doubt....it should be a fun tour."
Meanwhile...the Mytown boys, who hail from Ireland, are spending the night before the big show frantically figuring out what they're going to wear, getting haircuts and trying to decide if a surprise they have planned for the audience is too rude or not.
"We had one surprise but I'm not sure if it's going to go down to well," says Mytown's Marc. "It's something we wanted to do but we're not sure whether everyone's going to like it or not so we haven't decided until just before we go on stage whether or not we'll do it. It might be taken as rude but it's only a bit of fun."
Surprise or no surprise, when Mytown takes the stage tomorrow, opening their set with a cover Wham!'s "Everything She Wants," all the group members will be more than happy to perform for Canadians.
"We've just spent our time in America and we've been dying to come to Canada and do this tour," Marc says. "We're just looking forward to the whole thing. We're getting accepted pretty well here."
Like soulDecision's Dave, Marc is hoping that all the concert-goers will be as excited about PsykoBlast as he is.
"We want everyone to have a good time, the louder people get the more fun we'll have on stage," he says. "At one point during the set we have a little routine worked out and we kind of want the crowd to do it with us. If you really want to enjoy the show, do the routine, that would mean a lot to us."
Tonight though, Marc and the rest of the group will be focusing more on what they'll be wearing than how loud the crowd will be.
"We were supposed to receive all our clothes from the stylist and that got held at customs so we only got them today so we're now trying to sort all that out and decide what we're gonna wear," he says. "All that stupid stuff, vanity things."
Finally, what does the Grammy-winning pop star have in the works for her performance?
"It's going to be a big production," Christina Aguilera said during an interview with AllPop in May. "kind of giving it almost a theatrical, Arabian, edgy, urban feel. Incorporating some things from videos and playing them out onstage through costuming and lighting and effects. Maybe there will be genie bottles and carpets and things like that but with a mature twist to them too. It's not going to be kiddie."
