Breasts blamed for breakup
Scary Spice's ex-husband speaks up
LONDON -- Spice Girl Mel B's marriage broke down because she underwent cosmetic surgery that prevented her from breastfeeding her baby, her estranged husband Jimmy Gulzar said.
Variety reports the 33-year-old dancer said Mel B, 27, also known as Scary Spice, flew to Los Angeles three months after giving birth to their daughter Phoenix Chi and had a breast enhancement that she kept secret from him until it was already done.
A spokeswoman for Mel B. declined comment.
"Mel knew I was dead against it because it meant she would no longer be able to breastfeed Phoenix," Gulzar told British tabloid, the Sun.
"I felt Phoenix should come first. I wanted her to be strong and healthy, and all the advice was that breast milk is best."
Gulzar, who met Mel in 1998 when he was hired as a dancer for a Spice Girls world tour, said he had refused to make love to her for three months after she returned because he felt so betrayed, causing a rift that led to the breakdown of their relationship.
Mel B told the Mirror newspaper that breaking up with Gulzar had been so painful that it had nearly killed her, and that she had felt "vulnerable and alone" after their split.
