Holiday Glam
By STEPHANIE McGRATH -- AllPop
Sometimes it's fun to be a bit glamorous during the holidays, especially after you've spent hours wandering around in you pyjamas and eating turkey.
AllPop asked the Body Shop's international "Colourings" artist
Chase Aston -- who's done make-up for Britney Spears, Emma Bunton, and
Geri Halliwell -- for some quick tips on how to look sensational when
you make that big entrance at a New Year's party.
"[This season] has seen a move to the semi-matte skin, with light subtle
washes of shimmer on the cheeks", Chase wrote in an e-mail to AllPop. "Also, fresh, sheer washes of berry tones on the cheeks are really in fashion at the moment, complimented by a simple stain on the lips and then a sheer berry-toned gloss to highlight the lips. Eyes should be left sheer and simple with no harsh lines or contouring".
Other tips:
"You should have one simple wash of colour from lashline to brow
bone, then a soft brown smudged along the lashline. Brows should be
groomed and lightly shaded in and then set with a tinted brow and lash
gel!"
"To really open the eyes and emphasize them more, curl the top lashes
and apply two to three coats of thickening mascara and one coat on the
bottom lashes!"
"Remember that when you are following fashion make-up beauty
trends, always adapt! My mantra is "runway to real life". Whatever you
see in the magazines or on your favourite pop superstar, ADAPT! They can
wear that look and get away with it because they want to appear LARGER
THAN LIFE, but when you try to emulate that look for a high school party
or event, YOU DO NOT HAVE SUPERSTAR hair and make-up artists attending
to you!"
If you've tried all of Chase's tips and you look fantastic but not quite
as glam as Britney, remember this:
"When a film star or pop superstar are in a music video or on TV/film or
at an awards ceremony", Chase writes, "you have to understand that they
have a famous designer come along and fit them with a perfect fitted
fabulous dress. They spend the morning in their hotel suite/dressing
room with top make-up artists/hairdressers and a manicurist getting made
over to perfection. Then, in a photo studio or video film shoot, there
will be a lighting director who will control and manipulate the lighting
so that the subject looks and appears flawless. In the case of a stills
photo shoot, the magazine will retouch out any zits or blemishes. So a
lot of the superstars are just like you and me, but when they are
working, they have the advantages of pulling all the stops to look their
best!"
