I couldn’t believe I had moved. To tell you the honest truth I had moved 3 months ago. I lived in Stoufeville Ontario now. Before I lived in Winnipeg Manitoba.

I guess you’re probably wondering why I love in Ontario now. Well my parents divorced 5 months ago. I ended up living with my mom, which isn’t bad, but I had to leave my younger sister and dad behind. I missed her and my dad. I hadn’t seen them for 3 months. Brittin was 14 which was 2 years younger then me. Some people might find it hard to understand how close my sister and me am. It’s not that hard to explain really.

I hated my new school. It was full of obnoxious, bratty, rich kids. All of them thought they were better then the next person. It was hard for them to let a new person into there little clique. That’s exactly what it was too. In the three months I had been at that school I had been to see the principal 10 times! I don’t know why either. I always did my work. He said everything I wrote was depressing. Like I could help it? Ever since I moved to Stoufeville I had felt so complacent. I wasn’t even myself anymore. I needed my dad and Brittin.

“Colette! What’s wrong Hon?” my mother asked looking at me. I was just going to say the same as always but she would just go “Me and your dad just thought it was time to part.” So I said “Nothing mom.”

I looked at her with a cheesy grin on my face.

“Oh, ok honey” my mom said.

She was seeing a new guy. His name was Robert. But I was told to call him Bob. He was a flake. A loser. A jerk. He just made me so mad.

I got up from the table and walked to my room. I turned on my stereo and started listening to some music. See now that my mom had Bob she didn’t pay much attention to me. Maybe I could runaway. She wouldn’t notice would she? And after all, she had Bob. I had no one. That’s exactly what I would do. Run away back to Winnipeg.

Dear Mom, By the time you get this I will probably be gone. Don’t worry. I’ll be safe. You have Bob now and I have no one. I’ll phone you maybe, when I get to where I am going. Love Colette.

That was the note I left for my mom nice eh? I thought so. It didn’t say too much. What did I have to say? Not much because if she couldn’t tell what was wrong with me because she had no choice now. I was at the train station actually. I had packed a few things in a duffel bag and was on my way. I had been on the train for about three hours. We had to go to Toronto then it was en route for Manitoba. There was this really hot guy sitting a couple of seats away from me. He had this really nice dark brown almost black hair and these beautiful dark brown eyes. He had these cute ears too. They weren’t big and dopey or anything. They were just cute. It was so lonely on the train though.

I had to admit. I would miss my mom. But either way, I had to do this. I was off in my own thought about what my own thoughts about what my dad and sister would say when I got home, when I saw a tall shadow across from me. I looked up to see who it was. It was that hot guy.

“Is that seat taken?” he said. Looking into his eyes made me swoon.

“Nope.” I said moving my duffel bag off of the seat across from me.

“Cool. I’m Max. I thought you looked a little lonely over here all by yourself.” Max said. He had a nice name. Well a normal name.

“It’s alright. You didn’t have to come over. I’m used to being lonely.” I said looking at Max. He got a really weird look on his face.

“If you don’t mind me asking, what happened?”

“My parents got divorced 5 months ago. I’m from Winnipeg. I had to move from there to Ontario. I left all my friends behind and my dad and sister. Now my mom has a new boyfriend. So she doesn’t pay attention to me anymore. So I decided to run away.” I said looking at Max.

“I’m sorry to hear that.” Max said reaching over and hugging me.

“Thanks.” I said smiling and then looked at him “How come you’re here?”

“I’m going back home to Winnipeg. I was visiting my cousin in Toronto for a bit” Max said simply

“You love in Winnipeg? How come I’ve never seen you around?” I said looking at Max seriously.

“Well I went to a private school up until 2 months ago. Then I transferred to a new school.” He said smiling at me “I never got your name”

“Oh. It’s Colette.” I said smiling.

“That’s such a pretty name.” He said just as the food cart came along.

It was later on that night. I couldn’t wait to get to Winnipeg. I missed that place so much. Everything about it and everything I used to do there. I remembered when I used to go ice skating with my friends. That was fun. Someone always used to make me fall. Not like purposely making me fall on my butt! It would just happen! It was guaranteed to happen every time! Or like the time we went to the mall at Christmas. We sat on Santa’s lap to get a picture taken. Me and my best friend Foxx. I missed Foxx. We did everything together all the time! We usually hung out with my sister Brittin too. Which Brittin liked. Finally from my thoughts I started to fall asleep. The next thing I knew I was waking up to Max shaking me.

“What’s going on?” I asked looking at Max. He looked tired and like he didn’t really want to be awake.

“The train stopped at Portage La Prairie. We have to get off soon.” Max said looking at me. His eyes were rimmed at the bottom with black. He looked like he didn’t sleep much. That was too bad. I was hoping that we could be friends. See each other around Winnipeg and all.

“So are you going straight to your house?” Max asked looking at me. The train had started moving again.

“Yea, my dad will be at work. My sister should be at school. I was thinking of going to her school and surprising her.” I said looking at Max and smiling

“That’s cool! I’m not going home right away.. would it be ok if I came with you?” Max asked looking at me.

That look melted me. He probably knew I was putty in his hands. I didn’t mind if he knew though.

“Sure you can come with me!” I smiled. We chit chatted for a long time. For an hour until we got to Winnipeg.

I told Max he could have a shower in the shower downstairs and I’d have one upstairs in the washroom that connected my sisters and my room. He agreed to that and asked if he could leave his stuff at my house. I said yes.

We had finished taking our individual showers and were sitting in my living room watching TV until it was 2:30 and time to leave to go get my sister. Max was looking at me with a weird expression on his face.

“What?” I asked looking at him with a stimulated look.

“Nothing, I just thought I heard a door open, that’s all” Max said looking at me and then looking up at the ceiling when you could hear footsteps.

They were heavy. I recognized them. They were my dad’s footsteps. But shouldn’t he be at work? I thought he should have been, unless he worked somewhere different now.

“Max, how am I supposed to just go up there and face him?” I whispered under my breath.

“I’ll come up with you Colette, but you have to.” Max said looking at me and hugging me. His arms felt so good around me. I just wanted to be with him forever.

“Ok” I said softly. I got up from the couch and stood up and started to walk up the stairs with Max behind me as my dad opened the basement door and started to walk down them.

“Colette?!?” He asked looking at me with wide eyes

“Yea” I said softly looking at him.

“How did you get here?” he asked walking back up the stairs and into the kitchen.

“I took a train here” I said softly looking at him

“Does your mom know you’re here?” he asked looking at me.

“No.” I said looking at the ground and sighing.

“So, you ran away” my dad said. His voice sounded like he was questioning me but the way he was looking at me it was as if he was making a statement.

“Basically.” I said looking at my dad with wide eyes.

“How come?” he asked. His face looked sad and distraught.

“Mom got a new boyfriend. His name is Bob. He takes up all of her time and I barely get to see her. Plus, I missed you and Brittin too much.” I said looking at my dad. He looked as if he got a look of relief on his face.

“And who is this?” he said pointing to the guy behind me.

“This is Max. I met him on the train.” I said pointing to Max. Max extended his hand

“Hi” Max said shaking my dads hand

“Hello” My dad said then pulled me into a huge hug “I missed you kiddo.” He said while hugging me. I hugged him back. The truth was, he had wanted custody of my sister and me from the beginning but my mom wanted one of us.

“I missed you too daddy” I whispered. My dad hugged me for a bit longer and then let go.

“So are you planning on going anywhere?” he asked looking at me with big eyes

“I was going to go to Brittin’s school and surprise her” I said looking at my dad

“She’d love that” my dad said looking at me smiling

“I know!” I said looking at a clock on the wall and then smiling “Me and Max should get going though to make it on time!”

“Ok! Her locker is number 893. Your old locker!” my dad said smiling

“Thanks!” I said and hugged my dad and kissed his cheek

“So this is the school you went to?” Max asked looking around the hallway.

“Yea” I said sighing and looking around. I wonder if my sister had my old combination lock too. I fiddled with the lock for a bit until I got it open.

“I wasn’t allowed to go here. This is the school that my older brother got killed at.

“I’m sorry” I said looking at Max and hugging him tightly

“It’s ok. It was a long time ago” Max said looking at me. His dark eyes softened and he looked sad for a minute. Then he looked back up at me smiling. Then the bell rang. I looked at Max. He gave me a weird look and hugged me. All of a sudden I could hear my sister walking down the hall.

“I’ll see you tomorrow Darcy!!!” My sister said. She was about five feet away from me. Max was across from me standing on the other side of Brittin’s locker. I felt so weird just standing at my sister’s locker. She was talking to someone when she stopped.

“Colette?” she whispered softly. I spun around and looked at her. She was still 3 feet away from me.

“COLETTE!!!!!!!!!!” Brittin yelled running to me. She hugged me tightly and I hugged her back.

“I missed you” I whispered softly in her ear. She smiled and hugged me tighter

“I missed you too” Brittin said softly almost starting to cry.

It was later that night. Me and my dad and Brittin had done lots of talking. My dad had phoned my mom to let her know where I was. She wasn’t at home of course, so he left her a message.

We got caught up on lots of things and how I didn’t like living in Ontario. Max had stayed through the whole thing. He phoned his house and his parents weren’t going to be home for a little while.

“Max” I said softly looking at him. We were out in my backyard. It was night-time and we were looking at the stars and stuff.

“Yea?” Max said leaning on his side looking at me smiling.

“Am I ever gonna see you after this?” I asked looking into his eyes

“Of course” Max said smiling and running a hand through my hair just as he leaned down and kissed me.
