AllPop Reader Auditions for Popstars
Cory Sousa
AllPop Reader

Most Canadians know about "Popstars" by now. Last year, Global TV's reality program about the creation of a girl group gave birth to Sugar Jones. This month, auditions are underway for the next instalment of the "Popstars" series titled "Popstars Boy Meets Girl" where the search is on for a boy/girl pop act.

AllPop fan Cory Sousa auditioned in Calgary on Monday. Here is his account of his musical adventure:

I auditioned yesterday. (Monday, Sept. 10).

I sang Nelly Furtado's "I'm like a bird" and it was in the Paramount Theatres in the Chinook Centre in Calgary.

I was going to sing "Stutter" by Joe, but because lots of guys were not singing low, I figure I take a chance and sing Nelly's song low, but it didn't pay off :(

Apparently they had only two judges. Michael from last year and Mad Dog from YTV and that radio station in Toronto. Mad Dog was cool and encouraging and Michael was.. well.. he was Michael. It still amazes me that the president of Lone Star Entertainment makes the final decisions. What does he know about music? and I'm not saying this because I wasn't chosen. There was this one line of 5 girls. This one girl had this smart glasses wearing type look.

She was just wearing sweats as well. But you can tell she was a princess underneath. Anyways she sang and was amazing. Everyone cheered.

This blonde with big boobs sang as well in that same line of 5. She did alright, but who got the callback, yep, that's right, big boobs. Maybe they did it to create good tv, who knows. I probably should of spoke up to the media afterwards, oh well.

My buddy got a callback so that was cool. I also met this really amazing black soul singer. Amazing voice and he was super nice. Expect to see him in the final 25 as well as this beautiful blonde jazz singer. She was the whole package no doubt.

Oh, and they started from end to the beginning for the auditions. Meaning...the first people in the theatre, the first waiting in line, etc. were the last to sing their songs. I would say only about 400 people auditioned on Monday.

Note: "Popstars Boy Meets Girl" is scheduled to air in March 2002. You can download the audition form at www.popstars.ca.
