"Loser" lost its nasty streak
Amy Heckerling's latest movie "Loser" is a bit on the sappy/fluffy side but the original script had a nasty streak.
In an early version of the film, there was a scene involving Mena Suvari and Jason Biggs's three on-screen roommates in an attempted rape, Entertainment Weekly reports.
But preview audiences found it jarring, since the rest of the movie is supposed to be funny and romantic.
The cut scene showed the three roommates trying to take Dora's clothes off with veterinary equipment after drugging her with Rohypnol or "roofies", commonly known as the "date rape drug". Instead, the final version showed a drugged Mena Suvari passed out, fully clothed in the bathroom, found by Jason Biggs and hurried to the hospital.
"A lot of stuff had to be toned down, but the scene is an important part of the plot," Heckerling said. "I didn't want to deal with it in a preachy, 'movie of the week' way."
She went on to say that she wanted to include the attempted rape scene so the audience would know that the three roommates were "disgusting guys".
One of Heckerling's past films, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High", did cover semi-taboo subjects such as abortion, in gritty and realistic ways.
