So gross it's Scary
By BOB THOMPSON Toronto Sun
Rude, crude and lots of 'tude -- Scary Movie has all that and less.
It's a spoof for the whole dysfunctional family. It's a mother of a parody. It's pop full of puns with lots of kidding around.
Flying almost as high as the '70s disaster goof-off Airplane!, it also goes that low.
A rollicking rollercoaster ride of vulgarity, Scary Movie sets standards so demeaning that Jerry Lewis or Adam Sandler, or both, should've had cameos.
And yes -- it's funnier than Cats.
Keenen Ivory Wayans inspired that bit. Scary Movie, you see, is his fault. And I mean that as a mostly good thing.
In Scary Movie, Wayans skewers the '90s slash-and-trash teen flicks that have been haunting us, all over again, since Scream revived them.
Wayans also takes a sexy stab at mocking pop culture fixations with big breasts and sleazy sex, and teenagers who have, y'know, like nothing to say, okay.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Wayans, the creator of TV's In Living Color, brings a new meaning to T & A -- as in teehee-and-ass.
And, of course, there are fart jokes.
Consider this I Know What You Screamed Last Summer On Halloween.
If you don't like stupid human lampoon tricks then stay far, far away from this loopy land of Wayans lunacy, starring two other Wayans brothers.
Sure, it's nepotism. But they Wayans in with some funny stuff.
Shawn Wayans plays a good-looking high-school jock who is more blatant than latent about his feyness. Marlon Wayans is a dope-toking bong head.
Shannon Elizabeth, the American Pie foreign nymph, is the cleavage-baring beauty just asking for trouble. Anna Faris gets a few laughs as the Neve Campbell-like victim. So does Cheri Oteri as TV reporter Gail Hailstorm.
Carmen Electra, the girl with the gas problem, is a thing of beauty and a joy to listen to, since she doesn't have many lines.
Let's face it, the jokes, the pratfalls, the ridiculous exaggerations are the real stars.
Ditto all the smarty-pants references.
Try to keep score.
The Blair Witch Project gets what it deserves. So does The Matrix, even the Whassup? beer commercial makes an appearance and I dare you not to laugh.
The Usual Suspects gets a glib aside, too. It serves as the exciting conclusion of this Keenen Wayans production.
Yeah, right. Like Scary Movie needs one.
