Mom confirms this time jokester Green has tied the knot
By DENIS ARMSTRONG Ottawa Sun
When the media is around, Mary-Jane Green is a woman of few words.
But yesterday the mother of comedian Tom Green said a mouthful when she confirmed her prankster-playing son had indeed officially tied the knot with actress Drew Barrymore at a star-studded affair in California on the weekend.
Green, 29, and Barrymore, 26, wed in a beachfront celebration that included a karaoke machine and a bizarre ode to drag racing at a celebrity Malibu resort.
A tuxedoed Green was surrounded by friends and family from Ottawa -- including Green's parents and younger brother Joe, who acted as best man -- and Barrymore's estranged mother Jaid, who recently tried to hawk her famous daughter's baby clothes on the Internet.
The bride wore a sparkling white dress.
'Intimate group'
"It was a very, very beautiful ceremony," said Eddie Michaels, Barrymore's publicist.
Celebs attending included Barrymore's Charlie's Angels co-stars Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu, Saturday Night Live comedians Adam Sandler and Molly Shannon and Hole singer Courtney Love. Frances Bean Cobain, the daughter of Love and the late Nirvana leader Kurt Cobain, acted as flower girl.
Green's old capital buddies Glenn Humplik and Phil Giroux were also on hand.
"It was a very intimate group," said Michaels. "They really wanted to keep it private. It was a special time for them."
The privacy surrounding Saturday's event was unusual for Green and Barrymore, who have been accused of being anything but publicity shy.
Last summer, they announced their engagement, sparking a barrage of confusing rumours. Some said they had already been married in secret.
Later, Green suggested the nuptials might occur on an episode of SNL. That didn't happen.
But even Saturday's so-called serious celebration showcased the couple's sense of humour, including a reading about drag racing.
"They passed out pamphlets and people read (paragraphs about car racing) back to Tom and Drew," said Leslie. "It was just something that was humourous."
The marriage is the first for Green and second for Barrymore, who was married for 11 months to bar owner Jeremy Thomas in 1994.
And as for Green's bombshell on the Tonight Show a few months back that Barrymore is expecting, Michaels said yesterday it's just another of the couple's silly stunts.
"She's not pregnant," he said simply.
