Young girl changed 'Princess' ending
By LOUIS B. HOBSON -- Calgary Sun
HOLLYWOOD -- When he's directing a movie, veteran filmmaker Garry Marshall will listen to advice from almost anyone.
He owes one plot moment in his new family comedy, The Princess Diaries, to his five-year-old granddaughter.
The original ending for the film had the San Francisco teen, Mia Thermopolis, played by Anne Hathaway, simply agree to fly off to the fabled European kingdom of Genovia, where she would become a princess.
It wasn't enough for Marshall's granddaughter.
"She wanted to see the castle where Mia would be living and she wanted to make certain Mia's old car would accompany her because it was Mia's favourite possession," explains Marshall.
To appease his young fan, Marshall had Disney "buy stock footage of a European castle and then digitally add the flag of Genovia to it.
"It cost us a penny or two but it made my granddaughter happy."
Marshall says he's read the articles that compare Hathaway to Julia Roberts, who starred for the director in Pretty Woman and Runaway Bride.
"I don't buy the comparison to Julia, but I do see glimpses of a young Audrey Hepburn. Anne has such a sweet elegance about her."
