'Princess Diaries' sequel in the works
Expect another volume of "The Princess Diaries."
The Hollywood Reporter says Disney is already talking up a sequel to the surprise hit film, which according to ShowbizData.com has so far grossed $54.35 million.
Gina Wendkos, who wrote the screenplay for the first film, is working on a sequel. The idea for turning the film into a franchise was discussed even before the film's strong box-office performance, and Disney has a sequel option on the film's young star, Anne Hathaway, the report said.
Author Meg Cabot, who wrote the novel which was the original source of the film, published a sequel in June, entitled "The Princess Diaries, Volume II: Princess In The Spotlight."
There's no word yet on whether Disney's sequel will draw on the book, which follows the adventures of the teenage princess as she adjusts to her role as monarch of Genovia and tries to focus less on politesse and more on issues such as the environment. (More on Anne Hathaway)
