Aqua breaks up

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Danish pop group Aqua, which gained international fame with the 1997 hit “Barbie Girl,” is taking an indefinite break, the band said.

The four members cited lack of motivation but said they remained friends. They didn’t say when or if the band would reunite.

“We have realized that the spark just isn’t there right now,” the band said Tuesday in a statement posted on its official Web site.

Aqua, whose other major hits include “Cartoon Heroes” and “Turn Back Time,” has sold 28 million records worldwide. The band had been working on a new album, which was scheduled for release this fall.

Aqua band mates tie the knot
By PAUL CANTIN -- JAM! Showbiz Senior Reporter

Two members of Aqua have taken the plunge.

The group's official site (www.aqua.dk) confirmed that band members Lene Nystrom and Soren Rasted have tied the knot.

"I asked Soren to marry me on Sunday. Two days later we flew to Las Vegas and got married in the Little White Wedding Chapel," the site quoted singer Nystrom, who will hereafter be known as Lene Grawford Nystrom Rasted.

"When I said "yes" we just decided to go for it right away. Yet still, it was bit bizarre," Rasted added.

The couple spent a brief holiday in Vegas and Los Angeles but have postponed their honeymoon.

"First, we have to see some friends and our families, of course, and then we go back into the studio. We still have an album to make," Rasted said.

The band is currently working on their third album, with an anticipated release in the fall.

"For this album we have chosen an approach different from what we did when we recorded 'Aquarius' in various rented houses where we were locked away for months," Rasted said at the site.

"We have actually bought our own recording studio in London where we all live. So now we can go to the studio and work as long as we like and then go back to our homes and relax, without having that feeling of working, eating and sleeping in the same house for ages. I think it applies a more spontaneous approach to the whole work process."

It's too early to tell what the new album will sound like, but Rasted ventured "Let's just say that is different ... very different. And probably something that will come as a surprise to a quite few people out there."

Aqua chat transcript

Lene Nystrom and Rene Dif of Aqua chatted with their fans on AllPop.com on Friday, September 22. Below is a complete transcript of the chat.

Aqua: Hi, We're here! Ready to answer whatever you want to know. And yes....we tell all of our secrets!

Cyndi: Hi! How were the MMVAs last night? What was the high point of the evening for the two of you? Thanks!

Aqua: It's a very...organised chaos, its fun, there was a lot of other bands there, Denzel Washington, *Nsync, Steven Segal and Blink 182 and a whole bunch of other bands!!! (Len as well - look out for the movie later this year). The after party was our favourite part of the night. People are relaxing,

S&D: Are you currently working on your new album?

Aqua: Yes, that's why Soren and Claus aren't here they're in the studio.

Anonymous: Which song is your fave from the new album and would you ever make movies?

Aqua: I think bands should stick to what they're best at and that's making music! We've seen what happened with other bands.

Harry Wong: Hi Aqua! I just love your music and I can't wait till you start your Canadian-wide tour. I was wondering if you guys were regular Internet users and go online on your spare time?

Aqua: I do (Rene) Lene doesn't.... I don't have any favourite places.

Troy: I noticed that Rene has a chance to sing more on Aquarius. Did you intend to give Rene a larger part on this album?

Aqua: Lene - no this time we're going to give Soren a big part (laughs) Rene - yes, and Soren is gonna stick to what he's best at - doing music Lene - Soren sings well, he does.

Steve: I would like to say a congratulations on your new album its wonderful!!!My question is ..what is the hardest lesson you've learned about the music business??

Aqua: The hardest lesson is that you really have to work to stay on the top. Musically, you have to be a perfectionist, you have to take new chances and you have to do a lot of promotions.

Glenn Austin: Who or what were your musical influences? Have you had the chance to be able to meet them?

Aqua: Soren listens to early 80s pop music, Claus listens to Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk and Rene listens to hip-hop and R n B. Lene listens to rock music and mainstream. But we all have one band in common - ABBA! One thing we can agree with. Rene - yeah, we've met a lot of people Lene - you don't get really star struck, you see the same people pretty much over and over again (but we still get star struck with Madonna, she's the queen).

Debbie: How many songs have you written for the next album? Do you have any titles you could tell us? Thanks.

Aqua: Soren and Claus just went back to the studio, they have about 10 songs, no titles though. We just started. We usually write 30 or 40 songs for the album and then pick out the best ones.

Ashley: are there any plans for a tour in the future

Aqua: We're going to start touring next year. We're rehearsing for it in November and December and we'll do a tour early in the new year. There's something nice about every country. It's always cool to come to places outside of Europe.

Chantal: What inspired you to write the lyrics for Bumble Bees? I love the song but the song seems to centre around sex.

Aqua: It's just a song that explains a little bit about the sex education thing. It's a fun pop song, its a typical Aqua song. It could have been on both albums.

Janie Fisher: If you could pick one AQUA song to represent your message to your fans, what song would it be?

Aqua: Happy Boys and Girls - That's basically the whole message behind us, that's what we stand for. We just wanna make people happy. It's a very simple message but a very important one.

Carly: Hi Aqua. I really love your music. Where do you get the inspiration for the lyrics. Who's the one with the great sense of humour?

Aqua: Soren! he's just a joker, his mind is always working on a new joke, he's a very, very special guy (he's always the one laughing the loudest at his own jokes).

Janie Fisher: If the members of AQUA were all on "survivor", who would win?

Aqua: None of us! We would kill each other! Lene - Claus would die first! Rene - when we got fed up of Soren's laughing - he goes in the water too! By the way - Survivor started by a Swedish company!

JohnnyF: How does your band feel about Mp3's and the whole sharing music trend?

Aqua: Rene - I think it's bad and I basically think in the end, people want to go down and get the real thing, DOWNLOADING IS ONLY FOR LOSERS! It's very hard for upcoming bands to get a break when people are downloading. (They've never downloaded a song).

Michael : How did you come up with the name of your group?

Aqua: We had a poster in our studio in Denmark and it was from the National Danish Aquarium and we called the album Aquarium and the band Aqua after that. Water is important in everyone's life!

Janie Fisher: How has the promotion in Canada differed from that of other countries?

Aqua: We have a good fan base here and Canada is one of our biggest markets and its been one of the countries that's been embracing us from the start. But basically the promotion is the same (the work).

Anonymous: will there be any big collaborations with other musicians or groups in the future?

Aqua: We usually say that when you're a well established band there should be room and space for people in the group to try out something else. But Aqua is definetely. the mother ship for all of us.

KERRY: Have NY OF YOU GOT ANY PETS? IF SO WHAT ARE THEY AND WHAT ARE THEIR NAMES?

Aqua: Lene - I have two dogs, a beagle and a boxer one is called Dr. Jones and the other one is called Sarah Rene - I think I've got about 20 goldfish and they're huge! They don't have names though.

Ludovic (aquaman@ifrance.com): Hello Aqua, it's Ludovic the frenchboy with a white hat What will be the next single ? To my mind, it will be Halloween but I may be wrong. I'm right or not.

Aqua: Some countries are going for that one but most countries is We Belong to the Sea. did you have a good time in Brussels? Was that your girlfriend with you? We think it was.

raz_girl: lene, do you ever feel as if no one in the bands understands you, if so, how?

Aqua: I guess we all feel like that once and a while. I don't think that that has anything to do with the fact that I'm a girl. I'm very lucky that my best friend is travelling with me as our make-up artist so that helps. Rene - the same

Tanya: How long are you going to be in Canada for?

Aqua: We leave tomorrow for Europe and we're going to Sweden and Italy and Germany and Spain and then make a new video in Spain. The video will be a little bit more calm. It's a slow ballad.

Janie Fisher: Hey AQUA, I love you so much! If each of you could compete in one Olympic event in Sydney, which would you pick? Thank you for coming!

Aqua: Lene - I think I would like Triathlon Rene - I would go for boxing Claus would go for probably sleeping or curling and Soren would go for Olympic gold in flirting.

Julia: Hey René,my sexy libreman.Have you got a new tattoo on your arm?

Aqua: Yes! It's a secret...

Sarjenka: in every song there seems to be a different meaning, depending on how you listen to it--was this on purpose or did it just happen?

Aqua: It's the way that we write the music. We usually don't explain for people what our songs are about. It's up to the people to analyse it themselves. There's different levels to each song.

Rosanna: Hi Aqua. My daughter, Nicole, just loves you guys!!!!! She is 8 and her birthday is coming up and I would love it if you could wish her a Happy Birthday. It would mean so much to her! Thank you.

Aqua: Happy Birthday Nicole!

Michael: Hey, I'd just like to say that it's great that you guys don't take yourselves so seriously. Don't you guys find it sickening when pop-oriented groups take themselves so seriously?

Aqua: Maybe bands should loosen up a bit and have a lot more fun with what they're doing. We take ourselves seriously but at the same time we can't be too serious for a long period of time.

Carrie and Sarjenka: Do you ever wish that you weren't famous, and that you can just lie at home and relax?

Aqua: First of all we can lie at home and relax. Of course, there are someday when you would like not to be recognised but this is how it is and it's a life style so we're going to take the good with the bad.

Julia: Hi Aqua.Imagine you could turn back the time. What would you change and what you you do first?

Aqua: I wouldn't change anything otherwise I wouldn't be here.(Rene) Maybe some grades in school I would change (Lene)

Tina: Whe will you be touring the USA?

Aqua: We are not planning on touring the U.S. right now, maybe on the third album.

Ranger: So few bands nowadays have any viable longevity. What keeps you fresh, and enthused. (I love u Lena!)

Aqua: Sex, drugs, rock'n'roll (much laughter! they're joking don't worry)

Conor Begley, University of Western Ontario: Hi Lene and Rene! Welcome to Canada. My question is how does the music scene in North America compare to the scene in Denmark/Europe? I'd love to travel to Denmark someday, and the last place I've been to in Scandinavia was Iceland.

Aqua: It's very much the same, an example is like the Backstreet Boys and *Nsync were popular in Europe before their own country so we're pretty much in the same kind... We have a good variation in music!

Aqua: Thanks very much for chatting with us and to all of our fans in all of Canada we love you! You can catch up with us on http://www.aqua.dk !!!! And you can even see pictures of maybe when we were chatting.
