Five singer fined

"J" Brown of the recently broken-up boy band Five had to pay almost nine thousand dollars (Cdn) to charity because of his bar brawl.

J was fined by a Dublin court for his participation in bar fight in Dublin last December when he punched another bar customer in the face, Reuters reports.

The fight reportedly began when the victim starting teasing J and telling him that his boy band (Five) wasn't as good as the Irish group Westlife.

The charges against J -- assault and being drunk and disorderly -- were dropped after the payment to charity and an agreement to keep the peace for two years.

J's former band mate Ritchie Neville had to pay a little over five thousand dollars (Cdn) to charity for his role in the fight.

Five discusses break-up

U.K. boy band Five is no more, and the group members are saying the reason they decided to split Thursday is because they "wanted to bow out at the top".

During an interview with The London Sun, the group members said they planned to pursue solo careers, with the exception of J Brown who said "This is the last you'll see of me -- I'm retiring from showbiz".

Five hit the U.K. music world in December 1997 and sold seven million albums across the world. Their hits were "Keep On Movin'", "We Will Rock You" and "Let's Dance".

"It came to a natural end. There isn't a single problem between us -- we had a lot of blows," J told The Sun. "Right at the start we said that if we ever got massive we should end it while we were on top."

J said he plans to spend his new, non-Five life doing charity work and "humanitarian stuff".

Five boys in legal trouble

Thursday, December 21, 2000

Ritchie Neville and J Brown of U.K. boy band Five are to make a Dublin court appearance.

The two pop stars are expected in the Dublin court because of a bar brawl that reportedly started after someone made a crack about rival boy band Westlife, the BBC reports.

"Ritchie Neville and J Brown were arrested following an incident in a bar in Dublin," said Neil Reading, Five's publicist. "Brown will be charged with assault and public disorder. Neville will be charged with public disorder and disturbance of the peace."

Following the arrest, the two singers were held by Dublin police and later released on bail.

One man was injured during the bar fight, and two others were arrested.

Willie Ahern, who works at the Palace Bar, where the fight started, told the BBC that after the Westlife topic came up the "two lads in the band got really wound up. The Garda [police] were called and an ambulance arrived."

The bar fight victim is thought to have sustained facial injuries that needed stitches.
