M2M chats with fans on AllPop

Norwegian pop duo M2M dropped by AllPop.com on Monday, April 3 to chat with their fans about their music, crushes and favourite foods. Album Cover

Below is a complete transcript from AllPop's chat with Marion and Marit. M2M Chat Moderator: The M2M chat is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. ET.

M2M Chat Hi everyone, we're about to start!

Emma: I heard the Pokemon version of Don't Say You Love Me and it says that the guy says I love you but on the other version it says he started kissing her. Why did you change it?

M2M Chat Because the Pokemon people didn't find it appropriate to have kissing in the lyrics, because it was for younger kids. We think it was stupid. The original version is on the album, and that's the one we wanted to go with.

Anonymous: I love M2M!!! I was wondering, if you could work co-operatively with any artist or group, who would it be, and why?

M2M Chat Probably Hanson, because they are young and write their own music and play their own instruments like we do. We've never met them, though. We like The Moffatts, too. Travis is a group we like, too. They are a great band.

Erik: Yo, M2M Jeg bare lurte på om dere er blitt skikkelig bortsjemt nå når dere er berømt? Jeg håper dere en gang kommer til bergen. Da kan jeg komme og se dere live. I Love you both!

M2M Chat Hei! Nei, vi har ikke blitt bortskjemte! S[ klart vi kommer til Bergen s[ fort vi f[r sjansen...

:

Winks@(V)arion2(V)arit: What artist's music do you think your music resembles the most? Are these people you try and emulate or do you do your own thing, and it comes out resembling them?

M2M Chat We're doing our own thing. We are trying to sound like M2M. That's all we can do. That's what we're good at.

Amy.: Hey girls! For you album, Shades of Purple, you got to work with the same producers as the Spice Girls? What was that like? And you guys are so young, and normal. You're my age, and you guys do the same stuff us, like watch tv. How could that be?

:

M2M Chat It was great to work with Matt Rowe. He was really down to earth. He had some great ideas for our songs. We would love to work with him again. Of course, we're normal. We're just making music like you maybe play football or shop.

Winks@(V)arion2(V)arit: Which of your songs off S.O.P do you like the most? And why?

M2M Chat We really like Mirror, Mirror right now. It's the newest song we have, our new single. We write most of our songs, so most of it is very personal. We like all our songs, because they are all our little babies.

Becky, U.K.: Who in the music business has inspired you the most and why?

M2M Chat The Beatles, because they are the songwriting bible. They are the main ones, but we got inspired when Hanson came out. They were also young, but they wrote their own music, and we got courage to go ahead and do it.

Anonymous: hey Marion and marit.I'm Fency from Indonesia and I'm going to see your show on April 19.I can't wait to see you girls.I like your album. have you ever hung out with your fans?

M2M Chat When we meet our fans, we always try to hang out for as long as possible. We always have a schedule, but we try to make time. The problem is we never spend enough time in one place. When we meet people who really like our music, we only have a really short time with them and we don't get to know them. We're looking forward to seeing you. Hope you like our show.

Anonymous: Hey gals! You gals are great. Your CD is cool too. I just wanna ask you, where in Vancouver are you gonna have an autograph signing? And also, what advice would you give people that wants to become in the music business?

M2M Chat I don't know where we're doing the autograph signing in Vancouver. Keep checking our website www.m2mmusic.com, and we'll let you know there. You should just show everybody your talent, and you always have to start somewhere, like in the school choir. That's what we did, and it worked. Our families have been really supportive in a good way.

Anonymous: I heard that you are fans of Hanson, and are you planning on buying their new album when it comes out in May?

M2M Chat I already have it. I have an advanced copy, and I love it. Check out the song Dying To Be Alive. It's good. It rocks.

Tenille Jackson: 1) Do you have plans to do any touring of Canada soon? 2) How long have the two of you been friends? 3) Who are your favourite groups/singers?

M2M Chat 1) We haven't planned a tour yet. But when we are going to have a tour, we are definitely going to come to Canada. It is really the same as Norway. It is really relaxed and comfortable. The air is really clean. 2) We have been friends for 10 years. 10 years!

FANN: Hi! I'm a fan from Hong Kong. I know that you've came HK.Do you think HK is a good place ,and will you come again?

M2M Chat We will definitely going to come to Hong Kong again. I bought these really cool shoes there, and I want to go back to that shop! It was great food, by the way.

Andrew, from St. John's, NF: Hey, my name is Andrew and I'm a big fan. I've noticed from going to your website that you're quite busy, going sometimes from continent to continent in just a week! My question is, what do you do about your school work when you're on the road? Thanks!

M2M Chat Marion has a private teacher when she is travelling. And when I am home, I go to regular school. Marit is starting schooling this fall. I had a year off.

Anonymous: I would like to ask M2M what kind of boyfriends do they look for and are they always the one doing the dumping?

M2M Chat The guy should be nice, confident and fun to hang out with. Like, Marion hates guys who are begging and sticky, clinging. They shouldn't be too attached to you. We are not the ones that always dump.

Muff Olivieri: M2M, I love your music!!! I was wondering what instruments you both play? Did you grow up with piano lessons?

M2M Chat Marion started playing piano when she was eight. She would like to learn how to play drums. Marit started playing guitar when she was 13.

-David: Hi M2M! How are you? I doing great. On Tuesday, I'm going to go see you at Markville Shopping Centre. I just have one question. Since you did "Don't Say You Love Me" for Pokemon the movie, does that mean you are Pokemon fans and possibly Nintendo fans?

M2M Chat It was a great opportunity to share our music on the soundtrack. We didn't know about it before the soundtrack. It wasn't in Norway yet. Marit has a Gameboy, a purple one, and I play Tetris on the plane.

Jodi: You seem to be best friends. When was the last time you had a really big argument? How long did it take before you made up? Thanks.

M2M Chat Marion still has bruises. That's a joke! We don't remember.

Michelle: Who is the coolest person you've met since entering the music business?

M2M Chat Travis. We met them in Germany on a TV show. We were doing Top Of The Pops show. They were really nice and really talented.

June: If you weren't musicians, what other profession would you consider?

M2M Chat I know Marit would like to work with troubled kids. Marion has always wanted to be a musician, so I don't know what else. Maybe a makeup artist. That's fun.

Tracy: My favourite song on "Shades Of Purple" is "Our Song". Whose idea was it to put the Bee Gees song "Too Much Heaven" in the chorus? Do you know if they've heard it?

M2M Chat The Bee Gees people heard the song, and they liked it. So they said yes for us to use it. Marit and I didn't know the song. The producer suggested it. We didn't know it, and we know people our age don't know the song, so we are kind of showing them the song.

Emma S.: Why is your album called "Shades Of Purple"?

M2M Chat Because our favourite colour is purple. And we want to get a title that expressed that the album is us and through our eyes. I had these purple shades, and I thought they were pretty cool.

Mike: Do your friends treat you differently now that your famous?

M2M Chat Yes, they want my autograph every day. Just kidding! They are just the same and they always come and visit us when we are travelling.

kristina: if you could date a celebrity, who would it be and why??

M2M Chat That's a hard one. Marion says the singer in Travis, or the drummer in Hanson. Marit says, since she's in Canada, Scott from the Moffatts.

Sam-Ady-Sam: Did you ever take music/voice lessons before making it big?? and where are you 2 from??

M2M Chat We never took voice lessons, but we went to choir. We're from Norway, in Northern Europe. Scandinavia.

Smantha: What's the funniest thing that's ever happened to you while performing or doing an interview?

M2M Chat We were doing an interview for Norwegian TV, and all of the sudden there was a big microphone and it broke and fell right down to our heads. We were screaming. We thought it was for real, so we played along.

M2M Chat We were at this radio station, and it was the end of the day and I was really tired. We always say, hi I'm Marion when I meet people, nice to meet you. When we leave, we say bye, nice to meet you. When I was leaving this radio station, I put up this really fake smile and said, hi, I'm Marion, nice to meet you, to the DJ who had been doing the interview! Ha ha ha!

Andrew: I think it's great that you use your talent to write songs! They're great! When you're writing, do you write the music part first or the lyrics? Thanks!

M2M Chat It is different each time. Don't Say You Love Me was both at the same time. We did it as we went along. We had the idea what the song was supposed to be about.

Ian: Do you ever get sick of your songs from hearing them played so much?

M2M Chat Yes. All of them. Sometimes if I am really tired, and our song comes on somewhere, I go, ahhh! Get away from me! I went to the shopping mall where I live, they played our album over and over on the speakers. A lot of our friends are working at the mall, and the record is playing over and over and they are sick of it!

Jenni: Did you record any songs that you didn't use on "Shades Of Purple?"

M2M Chat Yes, we did. We had over 30 songs when we were going to start recording, and we recorded 16. Three leftovers. One is a b-side on the single, on the European single -- The Feeling Is Gone.

Charlie McDaniel: What's your favourite actor(tress)? and favourite movie?

M2M Chat Marit: I really like Joshua Jackson (in Skulls and Dawson's Creek). Marion: My favourite movie is Sixth Sense, and my favourite actress is Christina Ricci

sims: What really happened with Shades Of Purple's 12th track ? Why did the song name changed from "Heaven" to "Our Song" ? Is it only for copyrights reasons with the Bee Gees or is it something else ? (Marion, I know... but it is a good question after all)

M2M Chat Hi Sims, how are you doing (Sims visits their website). The song is called Our Song because it is not the Heaven song. We only used the chorus. If you listen to the line before the chorus, you can hear us saying Our Song because Heaven was the girl and the boys song in the song.

bigfan: Do you like the Spice Girls. Since you worked with their producer Matt Rowe?? Would you ever work with them??

M2M Chat They have some nice songs. I liked it when I was 12. We don't have any plans to work with them.

Sam-Ady-Sam: Who is your most favourite music artist that you would love to do a duet with??

M2M Chat Hanson.

Hehe (Hernan): Marit, what do you most admire about Eric Clapton, his creativity in lyrics, his ability to create music (non lyrically), his guitar playing abilities, or his butt?

M2M Chat I admire the fact that he is a singer, songwriter and amazing guitarist, and a great inspiration to me. I want to be like him. Thanks for being so supportive on our website, we really appreciate it.

Hehe (Hernan): Marit, you seem to be wearing a that necklace a lot. I'm referring to the one that is probably now around your neck, but it was on during the Much Music Interview. I was wondering what that thing on the necklace means and/or means to you?

M2M Chat It is the sign of Gemini. It is a really, really good friend of mine who is a Gemini.

Karmen from Slovenia/Europe: Hey Marit & Marion! How have your lives changed since you've gotten big? I mean do you get more guys after you or do people point at you on the street? P.S. You are two of the nicest, prettiest, talented girls around in showbiz!!!

M2M Chat The guys are actually more shy now that we are out with a record. I don;t notice people pointing at us, but my mom or my friends will point it out to us.

Arti: Hi m2m I love your new song what does mirror mirror mean

M2M Chat It is about a girl that has been fighting with her boyfriend and she really regrets what she said, and she is looking in the mirror and she doesn't like what she sees.

Hehe (Hernan): Just like to say you guys are great! Just wondering, who gets the more date offers, Marion or Marit. I would say Marit.

M2M Chat Marion is crying. Nice job! Ha ha.

Aimee: Hey! I've noticed that you guys have great fashion sense! Where do you most love to shop, and where's the best place you've been around the world for shopping?

M2M Chat In America, they have a store called Rampage. They have great clothes. First time was in the Beverly Centre in LA. London is definitely the best shopping place, but it is really expensive.

Karmen from Slovenia: If you ever met a fan that you relay liked would you ever date him?

M2M Chat A fan is a person, too. Ha ha. So yes, definitely. It hasn't happened yet.

Charlie McDaniel: You two have gotten pretty famous, well REALLY famous, in the last to months... Do you ever feel that it all happened/is happening too fast?

M2M Chat We think everything has gone a step at a time. We don't really feel we are famous, are we?

jimmy: Are you going to realise another single soon ?

M2M Chat We just released Mirror, Mirror.

Arti: HI M2M I LOVE HANSON TOO. I MET THEM. I WAS JUST WONDERING WHO DO LIKE FROM HANSON . MY IS TAYLOR

M2M Chat We like them all, all three of them. We are fans because their music is great.

Amanda: How did your interview at KISS 92 go today?

M2M Chat Tarzan is crazy! We had so much fun. He told us a lot of gossip, but we can't tell you. *evil*

jimmy_mdh: Have you started to think about recording a second album yet, or is that something you haven't thought about ? And what producers would you like to work with if/when you two record another album ? (I hope and think it will be a second album)... And please don't say a Canadian, because then sims will be terrorising me about it all the time :)

M2M Chat Hi Jimmy (a Swedish fan, right?) We already started writing songs for the next album. We always write songs, but we don't have a plan to start working on it for awhile. I really want to work with Jimmy Bralower, and also Billy Mann, who produced Jennifer Brown's record. He's Swedish.

Andrew: Hi, again. What's your favourite type of food?

M2M Chat Marion: Mine is cinnamon buns and baked potato, but not together. Marit: I like soup, any kind of soup. And white chocolate. Marion: She eats white chocolate like other people eat ... breakfast.

Conor (Canada): Hi M2M! I'm a university student from London, Ontario, Canada. I love your music! Do you find that the pop scene in Norway / Europe is different from the scene here in North America?

M2M Chat It is pretty much the same. We have the same people at the top of the charts. In Europe, we have as much crap and as much good music.

Muff Olivieri: Hi Marion and Marit! I was wondering if song writing was one of your major focus points or achievements on Shades of Purple?

M2M Chat Yes, it was one of our goals to write as good songs as possible. We knew they would be shared with a huge amount of people, so we wanted them to be as good as possible. Because we are going to be the faces that will sing the lyrics, and we want to identify with it and be proud of it. That's all the time we have. Don't forget our instore, which is at the Markville Shopping Centre, HMV store, Tuesday 5 p.m. And West Edmonton Mall, 6:30 performance, 7:15 autographs. Please stop by our website! www.m2mmusic.com. Thanks and goodbye.

M2M finds gold

M2M have reached the gold at the end of the rainbow with "Don't Say You Love Me".

The single, which is featured on the "Pokemon" soundtrack, was co-written by group members Marit Larsen and Marion Ravn from Norway.

According to Atlantic Records, the single was certified gold by the RIAA after sales in the U.S. crossed the 500,000 mark.

"Don't Say You Love Me" is still in the top 10 on Billboard's "Hot 100 Singles Sales" and the video is being played on MTV, The Box and MuchMusic.

M2M's debut album, "Shades Of Purple," is scheduled for release in March 2000 and will include "Don't Say You Love Me".

The album's contributors include Matt Rowe (Spice Girls), Max Martin (Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears), Jimmy Bralower, and Rickety Ray (All Saints).

Bowling and boyfriends - M2M style

By STEPHANIE McGRATH -- AllPop

Jetting from Tokyo to Norway then on to Sweden, making television appearances, doing radio interviews and serenading Pokemon - pretty run-of-the-mill stuff for 15- and 16-year-old girls.

Meet M2M, a Norwegian pop band made up of Marit Larsen (16) on guitar and vocals, and Marion Ravn (15) on keyboard and vocals.

From the bios and hype surrounding the two singers, you might expect another predictable addition to the pop music world - dyed blond hair, thick make-up, suggestive songs, a history with the Mickey Mouse Club and an overwhelming number of pop songs written by much, much older men. Album Cover

Surprisingly, M2M's music breathes fresh, brusque Norwegian air into the world of pop music dominated by Britney Spears wanna-bes and Orlando-born boy bands.

Although Marit and Marion get help from super-producers Jimmy Bralower (Jennifer Paige), Peter Zizzo (Celine Dion), Max Martin and Matt Rowe, they write a lot of their own music. That's easy to tell from their lyrics. Instead of singing about true love forever or candy or getting hit one more time, they sing about taking things slow or not betraying your friends.

The theme of M2M's first single "Don't say You Love Me," (now number 12 on the SoundScan charts in Canada and number 7 on the U.S. top 20), is about being suspicious when your boyfriend says he loves you.

"The song's about how a lot of boys say 'I love you' when they don't mean it just because they want to do something else," Marion explained down the line from her hotel room in Sweden. "A young girl shouldn't rush into anything. Just because the boy says 'I love you', doesn't mean you have to .... A lot of boys are like that when they're 16 or 17...or maybe all the time."

Marion says she and Marit get their inspiration from everyday events. Album Cover

"From dreams I have or maybe a girlfriend of mine tells me a story that happened to her. It's like writing in a diary. You just write what you feel."

The dark-haired half of M2M says some of the songs are very personal -- so personal she has to be careful not to let certain people know she's singing about them.

"You always watch it when you write a song. Sometimes maybe I write about a boy I met or a girlfriend's story but I don't write the song so the boy understands that it's him. I'm not that mean; I don't use, like, his name or anything."

Marit and Marion shouldn't have a problem writing songs that appeal to teenagers leading normal lives. They don't have millions of dollars or their own plane (yet) and they still get excited when they see famous boys they have a crush on.

"Our favourite song is "Misery" by the Moffatts," Marion says. "We were staying at the same hotel as them in London a year ago, we went down in the elevator and they were standing there and we were like, 'Oh My God'!"

But neither Marit or Marion could bring themselves to talk to the Canadian pop stars. Marion thinks it might get easier to talk to boys after they become famous.

For now, the girls of M2M lead a less-than-glamorous life. (Although Marion says her mom thinks people notice her when she's at the mall now). When they have free time, the girls hang out with their friends and do a lot of homework.

Last time Marion was home, the young singer who's on her way to being one-half of the newest pop sensation found herself at the bowling alley.

"I'm really bad," Marion says of her bowling talents. "We just wanted a place to hang out because my room is so small; no cute boys there though, just old fat men."

When Marit and Marion find themselves at home in Norway on a break, they try to take a little time apart. After all, they have been best friends from the age of five and spend nearly every day together travelling or doing promotions.

Working and travelling is nothing new to the duo. Marit and Marion met because they lived in the same neighbourhood and liked listening to music. They eventually starred together in musicals ("Annie," "The Wizard of Oz") and decided to record a children's album in Norwegian. The album proved that the girls were heading in the right career direction when it was nominated for "Best Children's Album" at the Norwegian version of the Grammy Awards.

Now, the girls are keen on storming the pop music world.

"Our dream right now is that a lot of people like our record so we can go on a world-wide tour, practice with, like, this really good band, and have thousands of people coming to our concert and singing along."

(M2M's debut album, "Shades Of Purple", is scheduled for release in January 2000.)
