Episode 20 - The Day After Tomorrow

By Daniel Barron for AllPop

If you ever wondered how Seth looks in long johns (haven't we all?), just watch episode 20, 'The Day After Tomorrow' where we see our favourite nerd getting dressed up by Summer in preparation for the move to the East Coast where Brown university is. Summer is excited for them to be going to school together next year (even though they haven't received their acceptance letters yet) and states outright that if Seth isn't going to Brown, she isn't going to Brown.

Sadie is with Ryan and she mentions the acceptance letters. Ryan is a lot less stoked about things than Seth and Summer. It seems university isn't the number one priority to him.

It also seems that Summer and Marissa aren't too stoked with each other either. They're sharing another awkward breakfast together. Marissa doesn't seem to care at all about Berkeley. When Julie walks out to see them, Marissa is a complete bitch to her once again. Marissa leaves and Julie confides in Summer and Mr. Roberts when he walks out as well. Julie is worried about her daughter. Neil compliments Marissa as a daughter and reassures Julie.

Sandy meanwhile is going on the offensive when it comes to everything going on with Matt and the Newport Group. He catches Dr. Griffin at the tennis courts and basically threatens him into quitting 'or else.'

Back at the Roberts' house, Volchok shows up and being the classy guy he is, asks for some beer money from Marissa. She goes in to the house and decides to take money from her mom's purse. It looks like Volchok is rubbing right off on her! Something in the mail catches Marissa's eye. It's a letter from Berkeley - it looks like she was accepted!! So she does what any teen would do - she throws it in the trash!!

Everyone else receives their letter. Ryan - accepted to Berkeley (no, he doesn't throw his out). Summer - accepted to Brown. Seth - not accepted! Summer rushes over to the Cohen's and sees Ryan and congratulates him. Just as she's about to look for Seth, he comes down and does what Seth does best, and lies through his teeth. He tells both Ryan and Summer that he got into Brown. Ouch.

Sandy and Kirsten are in the kitchen talking later on and they congratulate Seth when he walks in. Ryan follows soon after and he, too, gets their praise. Sandy decides it's yet another reason to celebrate so he plans a dinner for that night - and they have to bring the girls!!

Julie leaves a message on Marissa's cell later and she sounds none-too-happy. Neil comes up to her and shows her the acceptance letter that was in the garbage. Neil tells Julie that she has to talk to her daughter.

And hopefully the talk comes sooner rather than later! The next scene sees Marissa in bed once again with Volchok. She gets up and starts getting dressed because she has to leave to help plan a University Sweater Party that The Harbor School is having. Volchok laughs and asks her if she wants to come with him to Baja. Marissa doesn't commit to it but definitely doesn't say 'no' either.

It looks like the guys are doing a great job hiding things from their girlfriends. Ryan sees Summer at school and when Ryan brings up the dinner they're having, Summer has no idea what he's talking about. Seth never mentioned it to her. Ryan talks to him later and we find out that Ryan never mentioned his acceptance to Berkeley! C'mon guys!!

Ryan finally does tell Sadie later on that day about getting in to Berkeley. Sadie is happy for him, and the ever-more-romantic Ryan tells Sadie that he's never been happier with a girl he's dated in his life. Sadie eventually says she would move to Berkeley with Ryan!

Dinner that night isn't the happy affair Sandy and Kirsten were hoping for. Ryan and Sadie tell everyone that she's going to move to Berkeley when Ryan leaves for school. Everyone is completely taken aback and there's an awkward silence. Sadie excuses herself. Later on, Seth and Summer are talking and she's wondering why he's been so quiet all night. Seth still doesn't come clean about not being accepted to Brown. He simply tells her that school should come first and foremost in her life. He basically hints at her that he shouldn't be going to Brown because he'll be distracting her. Summer leaves, heartbroken, realizing that Seth doesn't think of her as 'the one.'

The next day, Julie walks into Marissa's room and tells her straight out that she's worried about her. Marissa tells her mom that this 'isn't about you' and that she can't picture herself at Berkeley. Marissa seems very unsure of herself and Julie simply says 'don't give up on yourself.' Marissa replies by saying 'I'll think about it.'

Ryan visits Seth in his room and they talk about Summer. Ryan knows something is up and asks Seth if he did, in fact, get into Brown. Seth does his best to lie for about two seconds and then fesses up. Ryan asks him why he's lying, and Seth says it's for Summer. It's the opportunity of a lifetime for her.

Later, Ryan meets with Sadie at the diner. He apologizes for the strange dinner last night and asks her to go to the sweater party with him. Sadie just wants to make sure they're doing everthing for the right reasons. She doesn't want to get in the way; Ryan assures her that this is what he wants to do.

Taylor, meanwhile, is doing her best to be Summer's confidant. Summer is really broken up about things and Taylor likens Seth - and all guys - to being gorillas. They have to let loose every once in a while and show their dominance. Seth is just being a gorilla but it will pass.

Sandy goes to talk to Ryan at the poolhouse. He gives Ryan his old Berkeley sweater and he brings up the school year next year. Sandy says he'll pay for Ryan but Ryan says he wants to live with Sadie. Ryan obviously didn't think about things like getting a job and balancing school life with work and a social life. It seems Ryan may be a little scared now that Sandy has opened his eyes to reality a little bit more.

In some more promising news, Volchok calls Marissa asking about her going to Baja and she declines.

Ryan goes over to Sadie's, ready to tell her that maybe they shouldn't move together when he goes to Berkeley, but before he has a chance to say anything more than that he has something to tell her, Sadie tells him that she's ready to move with him. She has a job set out and she's pumped. Then she asks him what he was going to tell her. Ryan gets cold feet and lies to her, saying everything is fine.

Marissa walks into Summer's room that day and she sees how said Summer is. She tells Marissa about what happened between her and Seth. Marissa apologizes for how she's been acting, and Summer asks her why she's been acting the way she has lately. Marissa says something about trying for her 'old life' and how it wasn't working. Summer forgives her but insists she go to the sweater party. She even bought her a pink Berkeley sweater.

In another part of the house, Julie is talking to Neil. She thinks he's testing her as a mother to see how she handles the whole situation with Marissa. Neil apologizes and makes it clear that that's never what he intended. It's perfect timing on the part of Marissa and Summer as they both walk out of the house and say goodbye - it's obvious to the soon-to-be husband and wife that the two girls have patched things up.

The gang shows up at the sweater party, though Seth's Brown sweater is mysteriously absent. Ryan pulls Marissa aside and tells her that if she ever wants to talk, he's there for her.

We then shift to a scene between Sandy and Dr. Griffin. Sandy once again threatens Dr. Griffin, who insists he had nothing to do with Matt getting beat up. He reminds Sandy of what a great opportunity it is for them with the hospital, revitalizing the area. Sandy seems to hesitantly accept Dr. Griffin's word.

More trouble is brewing for Sandy, though, as Matt shows up at the Cohen's house, his face covered from bruises he suffered from the attack earlier. Kirsten opens the door and it's clear Matt wants to talk to Sandy. When Kirsten tells him Sandy isn't around, Matt tells her to tell Sandy that he'd better quit his job soon or it'll be 'too late.'

Drama is unfolding by the bucketful back at the beach. Seth talks to Summer alone and tells her that he isn't sure he wants to go to Brown. He insists that she go, but he never once mentions that he wasn't accepted. Obviously fed up with the emotional roller coaster she's on with Seth, Summer flat out says 'it's over' and walks away.

Sadie and Ryan are also alone, talking about their future. Sadie tells Ryan that she isn't going with him to Berkeley. Ryan is upset but seemed to have accepted that this was going to happen. Sadie leaves to start packing so she can leave in the morning. She tells Ryan to keep in touch and that she's going to miss him.

Sandy comes home and Kirsten tells him about Matt visiting. Sandy tells her it's 'complicated'. Kirsten tells him she's worried he'll become just like her father did when he controlled the Newport Group. Sandy tells her that he isn't going to quit over this and Kirsten walks out of the house.

Summer comes home and rips up a collage with pictures full of her and Seth. Her and Marissa lay down together on her bed while Summer cries.

What was Seth thinking?!
