Do you 'Olive Juice" Backstreet?

Monday, Sept. 10, 2001

Next time you're gazing adoringly at Backstreet's Brian Littrell, why don't you try mouthing "Olive Juice" at the singer instead of screaming "I Love You!!" hysterically.

"Olive Juice" stars Brian's wife, Leighanne Littrell, as a Michelle Malloy, an engaged woman with a soft spot for dogs and a doggy bakery owner named Keeler Davis played by James Berlau, (who is not her fiancée).

Michelle is visiting her sick mother in Orlando when she stops by a doggy bakery and meets Keeler, the owner, who is dog obsessed.

Michelle's fiancée is, of course, totally wrong for her but it takes several platonic dates and puppy visitations at Keeler's store for her to realize that sensitive Keeler is the man for her.

The movie isn't appropriate for very young Backstreet fans although two BSB stars - A.J. McLean and Brian - do make an appearance.

A.J. shows up onscreen as DJ Naughty, a popular DJ who is spinning at the Orlando club where Keeler and Michelle go to dance. He doesn't say much and his main role is to look first trendy and later cranky when Michelle's fly-away shoe knocks his record out of sync.

Brian makes his appearance as an agreeable horse-drawn carriage driver who chauffeurs Michelle and Keeler home after their wild night of dancing to DJ Naughty. Brian's role demands that he flash a big smile at the camera for about 30 seconds so Backstreet fans who have rented the film can shriek with excitement.

The strange movie title comes from an exchange between Keeler and Michelle who says that she used to woo boys when she was young by mouthing "Olive Juice" at them. (Like the old grade six "elephant shoe" game, when you mouth "Olive Juice" it looks like you're saying "I Love You".)

The movie is far from fantastic and the plot is about as predictable as an episode of "Dawson's Creek". But, James Berlau is both likeable and believable as Keeler and Leighanne does a decent job playing the stressed and sad Michelle. The supporting cast however, is painfully wooden and inexperienced.

Backstreet fans or movie-goers who hunger for a movie full of cute dogs and typical romantic comedy scenarios can rent "Olive Juice" on Oct. 9 in Blockbuster stores throughout the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean.

How many peanut butter sandwiches could you eat if you were a Backstreet Boy?

According to the group's backstage catering rider, which lets concert promoters know what the group expects to be provided with at tour stops, there should be 24 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in their dressing room, TheSmokingGun.com website claims.

The rider stipulates that the dressing room should also be stocked with juice (orange and apple), pop and cereal and fruit and vegetables. But remember....the Boys don't want to look chubby onstage which might be way this message appears underneath the list of required dressing room foods:

"NO candy, chips, or junk food of any kind please,".

The rider also lists menu choices for the boys breakfast, lunch and supper asking that there be hot sandwiches, 2 kinds of salad and soup available for lunch and chicken, beef, fish or vegetarian dishes available for supper.

And if Backstreet's coming to your town and you're thinking about breaking out the paper plates to save time in clean-up, think again.

"All meals are to be sit down meals with clean table cloths, real plates (no paper), silver ware, real coffee cups, and condiments as needed. Any other nice touches will be greatly appreciated," reads the BSB catering rider.

The Backstreet Boys first started popping up on music critic's radars in 1997. A concert review done by the Toronto Sun on Monday, Jan. 6, 1997 said this about the group's show:

"Music and dancing aside, the Backstreet Boys are squeaky-clean fun, masters of fluff. Only five more years until the next sensation."

A year later, another review from the boys' show in Toronto on Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998 didn't have many good things to say about the group's performance:

"But no amount of special effects could cover up the fact that the Backstreet Boys' act was wearing thin. Instead, they looked like parlor tricks designed to draw attention away from the show's threadbare musical furnishings," read the Sun review.

But in 1998, the boys were far from finished storming the pop world. Their popularity continued to grow with the release of their album "Millennium" and their following tour in 1999 which saw 29,000 fans crowd into Toronto's SkyDome to see them perform.

On September 12, 13 and 14, Backstreet will once again perform in Toronto. If you're wondering what they'll be singing at the Air Canada Centre on those dates, here are a few set lists from previous shows that may give you an idea of what you might be hearing at the concert.

  • What's Next?

    Monday, September 10, 2001

So What's next for our beloved Boys? *They've got a compilation album in the works, tentatively titled "Chapter One" and scheduled for release on Oct. 23. The new album will feature a previoiusly unreleased track called "Drowning". *A.J. seems to be recovering well from his stint in rehab and fans have reacted to his onstage return with heartfelt screams according to recent concert reviews. *Despite frequent internet rumours that the boys are on the verge of a break-up, the group members are vehemently denying that the end of Backstreet is in sight so only time will tell if BSB will continue to croon their catchy hits for years to come.
