The star of a new, much buzzed-about series, says he isn't playing a super hero.

Tom Welling will play Clark Kent in The WB's brand new drama titled "Smallville", which will debut in the fall, TV Guide reports.

But Tom insists he isn't playing Superman, Clark Kent's alter-ego.

"I'm not Superman I'm Clark Kent, before he was Superman," Tom told TV Guide.

"Smallville" will air on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on The WB. Early reports on the show have been positive, but the high expectations haven't gottent to Tom yet.

"I know that there is a lot of money and a lot of time and concern invested in this by The WB," he said, "but I think it's all worthwhile. Why should I feel pressure? You only feel pressure if you don't think you can perform. I think this is going to perform."
