SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH

Monday September 25, 2000

'Sabrina' return haunts ABC

The WB's "Sabrina, The Teenage Witch," bewitched television viewers on Friday, earning the network its best overnight ratings in the WB's history and beating the show's old network, ABC.

The show's first airing on the network (after four seasons on ABC) achieved a 3.9 rating and 7 share, which was 44% ahead of the WB's 1999-2000 season average in the same time slot, Variety reports.

The network's new series, "Gross Pointe," a spoof on teen soaps, earned respectable ratings on Friday 200.

When "Popular" aired at 9 p.m., it was to the tune of a 2.8 rating, up from the show's Thursday debut a year ago.

"This is a great start for us on Friday nights, and I believe we'll get stronger," said Susanne Daniels, the WB Entertainment president. "To have the highest-rated comedy on the night our first week out confirms our belief that 'Sabrina' is still a very important show for families on Friday nights."

Meanwhile, ABC, the network which waved good-bye to "Sabrina" and its "TGIF" youth marketed Friday night programming this season, only managed a 3.4 overnight rating in its 8-10 p.m. slot.

"Sabrina" stars Melissa John Hart and follows the comedic exploits of a teen witch.
