Staal earns CHL Player of the Week honours

Week Number 20

Peterborough Petes' centre Eric Staal is the Canadian Hockey League Player of the Week for the week ending February 23, 2003. Each week during the regular season a CHL Player of the Week is selected based on the three members' leagues' player of the week.

In three games last week Staal scored four goals and added four assists in helping the Petes record three wins. A highlight of the week for the native of Thunder Bay, Ontario was a three goal and one assist performance in Peterborough's 8-3 over the Greyhounds in Sault Ste. Marie on Sunday. Staal, who is rated as the top North American prospect for the 2003 National Hockey League Entry Draft, is tied for fifth place in Ontario Hockey League scoring this season with 88 points on 34 goals and 54 assists.

Jean-Francois Plourde of the Sherbrooke Castors is the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending February 23. In three games last week Plourde, who is the CHL's leading goal scorer with 55, scored five goals and added three assists. The QMJHL's Defensive Player of the Week is Shawinigan Cataractes' goaltender Michel Bergevin-Robinson.
