McLaughlin Selected As CHL Player of the Week

Jordan McLaughlin of the Western Hockey League's Vancouver Giants is the Canadian Hockey League Player of the Week for the week ending October 14, 2002. Each week during the 2002 - 2003 regular season, the CHL will name a player of the week. The player is selected from each of the CHL's three member leagues' players of the week.

A native of Edmonton, Alberta, McLaughlin recorded back to back shutouts to become the first member of the Giants to ever capture both CHL and WHL Player of the Week honours. On October 12 McLaughlin made 26 saves to lead Vancouver to a 3-0 win over the visiting Lethbridge Hurricanes. On October 14 McLaughlin turned back 25 shots from the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds in the Giants' 6-0 win. In four starts this season McLaughlin has a 1.62 goals against average and a .945 save percentage.

Centre Kyle Wellwood of the Windsor Spitfires was the Ontario Hockey League's Player of the Week. In two games last week the Toronto Maple Leaf draft pick scored four goals and added four assists in pacing the Spitfires to two wins.

Francis Lemieux of the Chicoutimi Sagueneens was selected as the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending October 14. In three gams last week Lemieux recorded nine points on three goals and six assists. The QMJHL's Defensive Player of the Week was Maxime Fortunus of the Baie-Comeau Drakkar. In play last week Fortunus was a plus 3 with two assists in three Drakkar wins.
