| Sunday, October 21, 2001 Canadian Rosario scores OT winner in MLS title gameCOLUMBUS, Ohio (CP-AP) -- The San Jose Earthquakes and Canadian coach Frank Yallop capped a worst-to-first turnaround Sunday when the Earthquakes downed the Los Angeles Galaxy 2-1 in extra time for the Major League Soccer title.Rookie striker Dwayne DeRosario of Toronto scored the winner six minutes into overtime after coming on as a substitute in the 85th minute. The 23-year-old dribbled around Dan Calif and sent a hard shot from 16 yards out which goalkeeper Kevin Harman got a hand on but couldn't push past the far post. It was a redemption goal for the Canadian international, who had a difficult time cracking San Jose's starting lineup this season. In their first year under Yallop, a former Canadian defender who lives in Port Coquitlam, B.C., the Earthquakes went from last in the league at 7-17-8 to 13-7-6 and second in the Western Division behind Los Angeles. Yallop, 37, was voted the league's top coach last week. The Galaxy's Luis Hernandez opened the scoring in the 21st minute by outracing defender of the year Jeff Agoos to a long pass from Greg Vanney. Hernandez put a shot from 10 yards out past the onrushing Joe Cannon into the top right corner. San Jose tied the game two minutes before halftime. Ian Russell sent a pass from the corner to Landon Donovan, who volleyed a shot past Hartman. After an evenly played first half, San Jose dominated the second half, outshooting Los Angeles 12-3. The Galaxy, who have never won the championship, also lost the MLS Cup in 1996 and 1999. Yallop, who played in 52 games for Canada, was a member of the Tampa Bay Mutiny before retiring in 1998 and becoming an assistant coach for the Mutiny and then D.C. United. As a player he made 376 appearances for Ipswich Town in England from 1983 to 1996 before moving to MLS. |
