T.J. a Tiger for Salem Canucks

Players of the Week, Week Nine Honours

By MIKE CORMACK and BOB ELLIOTT
For SLAM! Canadian Baseball

Earlier this week, Rickey Henderson signed a contract with the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League. The 44-year-old is hoping to play well enough to catch on with a big-league club before the end of the season but long gone are the days when Henderson could take over a game with his speed.

Rich Leitch, head coach of the Salem International Tigers however, says he's experienced more than a few Rickey flashbacks of late.

Leitch's reminder comes in the form of shortstop T.J. Shimizu. The Tiger's lead-off hitter has used his quick bat and even quicker feet to terrorize the opposition this season at the plate, in the field and on the base paths.

Shimizu, a transfer from Northeastern Oklahoma A@M Junior College, went 16-for-27 (.593) with 12 runs, one home run and six RBIs for the week and was also a perfect 10-for10 in steals.

So, Shimizu (junior, East York, Ont.) is this week's SLAM! Canadian Baseball College Player of the Week edging right-hander John Axford (sophomore, Port Dover, Ont.) of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish; third baseman Hyung Cho (junior, Scarborough, Ont.) of the Houston Cougars; right-hander Jim Henderson (junior, Calgary, Alta.) of the Tennesse-Wesleyan Bulldogs; right-hander Jordan Holloway (sophomore, Pitt Meadows, BC) of the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters and right-hander Brooks McNiven (senior, Vernon, BC) of the British Columbia Thunderbirds.

The weekly honour recognizes the best of the 534 Canadians playing south of the border.

"He's been unbelievable for us," Leitch said of Shimizu. "He's just so much like Rickey in how he can control a game with his speed."

 Or several.

How the week that was went for Shimizu as he:

  • Went 1-for-3 including a double, walk, stolen base and run scored in Salem's 7-5 victory over Ohio Valley at Frank Loria Field in Salem, W.Va.

  • Had three hits, a walk, a stolen base, drove in a pair and scored twice himself in a 13-0 win over Ohio Valley.

  • Was 4-for-5 with three runs scored, two RBIs and three stolen bases in a 15-2 win over West Virginia Tech.

  • Went 2-for-3 with a RBI, a double and a run scored in a 5-2 win over West Virginia Tech.

  • Led off the seventh with a solo shot to dead centre field to spark a five-run Tiger rally in an eventual 7-6 win over Bluefield State. For the day, Shimizu had a pair of other hits in the contest and swiped a pair of bags.

  • Went hitless in 8-6 win over Bluefield, but drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly.

  • Walked twice, stole three bases and scored three times in 7-3 win over West Virginia Wesleyan. He also made a diving stop on a ground ball up the middle and flipped to shortstop David Parsons (sophomore, Gander, Nfld.) for a potential game-saving double play in the seventh.

  • Went 2-for-3 including a triple, a walk and a run scored in another 7-3 win over West Virginia Wesleyan.

"I've never coached a kid as hot, for as long as he's been," said Leitch, a Scarborough Ont. native, who is one of the few Canadians to hold a head coaching position at an American college.

Leitch figures the 5-foot-9 165 lb. Shimizu, who has received interest from the Los Angeles Dodgers,

will be a late round pick in the amateur draft, but

says teams might want to take a closer look at his speedy lead-off hitter.

"He's defence is even better than offensive, which is terrific, so anyone that takes a chance on him might end up looking like a genius."

Leitch took a chance on Shimizu after hearing about him through some friends who were played against him in the Toronto senior leagues. Shimizu was playing for East York at the time.

A former Salem Tiger himself, Leitch returned to Virginia prior to the 2000 season to work under head coach Brad Warnimont. When Warnimont left two years

later to take over at Rio Grande in Ohio, Leitch was handed the reins.

In second season as head coach

Leitch has already put his own uniquely Canadian stamp on the ball club. All nine position starters are Canadian as are three starting pitchers.

"Everyone down here (in the U.S.) is over-scouted to death," Leitch said. "The Canadians don't receive that much exposure, so there's always that hidden gem waiting to be discovered."

And Leitch spends a lot of his recruiting time mining Canadian fields

for talent < as much as 80-to-90 per cent of his total recruiting time, he estimates.

"Hey, all my contacts are up there," he said.

And for the first time in decades, Leitch's all-Canadian nine has Salem competing for a conference title.

"We're primarily a big basketball market down here (in Virginia)," Leitch said. "But we're starting to get some media attention and some talk on campus.

"The people don't really care where the players come from. It's just been so long, they're ready to see somebody challenge for a conference title."

The Salem starting nine consists of (some we have stats for and some we don't):

  • Catcher Tanner Hill (junior, Stoney Creek, Ont.).

  • First base Andrew Palmer (senior, Mississauga, Ont.).

  • Second base Shimizu (sophomore, East York, Ont.): leads the West Virginia Athletic Conference with a .468 average and has scored 32 runs, tied for second best in the conference and has swiped 31 bags in 33 attempts.

  • Third base Shawn Scott (junior, Windsor, Ont.).

  • SS Parsons (sophomore, Gander Nfld.): is hitting .380, with 31 RBIs and has swiped 22 bases in 24 attempts. He's a former Conference Player of the Week winner.

  • Left fielder Ryan Crotin (junior, Whitby, Ont.): has six homers and 29 RBIs.

  • Centre fielder Kael Racioppa (senior, Pickering, Ont.): has been successful stealing in 19 of 22 attempts.

  • Right fielder John Hull (junior, East York, Ont.): owns a .385 average, with 12 doubles.

  • DH Jeff MacLeod (junior, Milton, Ont.).

Starters: Right-hander Mark Garrard (senior, Port Hope, Ont.) is 5-1, and earlier won a Conference Pitcher of the Week honours; right-hander Jason Ulmer (sophomore, Ottawa, Ont.) is 4-4 and right-hander Justin Bartkiewicz (senior, Dundas, Ont.) has a 3.15 earned run average.

And how other Canadians fared during the week:

  • Right-hander Mike Alexander (sophomore, Dartmouth, NS) is 2-4 with a 6.10 ERA for Taft Cougars. He has fanned 32 in 41 1/3 innings. Outfielder Kyle Curtis (freshman, Edmonton, Alta.) is hitting .227 with four doubles, one homer and 10 RBIs.

McRae doubled in a run.

  • Catcher Cole Armstrong (sophomore, Surrey, BC) homered and drove in five runs to help the Chipola Indians beat Pensacola 17-2 at Marianna, Fla. For Armstrong it was his fourth homer. The Indians scored 13 times in the first. Left fielder Adam Loewen (freshman, Surrey, BC) went 4-for-4 with three homers. Armstrong homered and drove in two runs to help as Chipola edged Pensacola 7-6. Loewen doubled, his eighth of the season and left fielder Andre Meadus (freshman, St-Bruno, Que.) singled. Loewen and Armstrong each singled in a 12-4 win over Pensacola. DH Loewen had a pair of hits and drove in a run in a 16-3 loss to Okaloosa-Walton at Marianna. Armstrong singled and knocked in a run. DHing Loewen, had two hits, including his ninth double in a 5-4, 10-inning win over Okaloosa-Walton at Niceville, Fla. Loewen worked eight innings on the mound to wind up with the no decision. • Right-hander John Axford (sophomore, Port Dover, Ont.) continued to roll along as the 16th-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish won its 12th straight beating the Wester Michigan Broncos before 901 fans at Frank Eck Stadium in Notre Dame, Ind. Axford worked seven innings allowing six hits and one run in his 104-pitch outing. Axford did not walk a man and whiffed 12. Axford's 12 whiffs are the most ever by an ND pitcher at The Eck and one shy of the facility's overall record (13), set by Alabama's Will Schleuss in 1995. Axford, who dropped his season ERA to 2.14 is now 6-0 and already has bested his freshman-year win total (5-2). Axford became the 17th Notre Dame pitcher to post 12-plus Ks in a game and is the fourth to do so since 1980, joining Darin Schmalz (12 in nine innings at Georgetown, in 1996), Brad Lidge (12 in seven innings against Pitt, at Three Rivers Stadium in '98) and Aaron Heilman. Heilman had 12 strikeouts games in 2000 (eight innings against Georgia in the Metrodome) and 2001 (nine innings against Rutgers in the Big East tournament, nine innings), in addition to his 18 strikeout, 10-inning game at West Virginia in 2000. Axford's season totals now include 47 strikeouts, just 16 walks (nearly a 3-to-1 strike out-to-walk ratio), 36 hits allowed and a .224 opponents batting average in 42 innings. It was his first outing in 10 days, after a doubleheader at Boston College was rained out.
